Use this enrichment activity about isotopes to develop students' understanding of physical science concepts. Students will interpret a table in this printable in order to answer questions about hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen isotopes. Teach atomic mass calculations in your chemistry class by using the Eggium example. Students are lead through an activity that starts with calculating mass number, moves on to natural abundance, and culminates in the calculation of the atomic mass of our fictitious element. This is a great hands-on simulation for anyone looking to spice up this text-rich portion of a chemistry curriculum.

Chem We are an isotope geochemistry and geochronology laboratory located in the Department of Geosciences at Stony Brook University. We are dedicated to furthering all fields of science through high quality isotopic analysis and research using state-of-the-art mass spectrometry. Since that achievement, the Lab has continued advancing the production of the valuable radioisotope—leveraging the Lab’s High Flux Isotope Reactor and the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center, ORNL’s largest hot cell facility—moving closer to the goal of 1.5 kg of Pu-238 annually by 2025. We offer analysis of more than 20 isotopic systems by two different high resolution ICP-MS techniques: high-resolution ICP-MS (ICP-SFMS) and multi-collector ICP-MS (MC-ICP-SFMS).

Atomic Mass and Isotopes Lab M&M © Isotopes Introduction In this lab you will study the isotopes of the rare element, Oregonium, (symbol Or) which occurs in M&M ©’s. The specific isotope is indicated by the color of the M&M ©. Below is a list of all the known isotopes of Oregonium along with the corresponding M&M © color. M&M © Color Isotope Symbol Mass Number This lab uses the Isotopes and Atomic Mass simulation from PhET Interactive Simulations at University of Colorado Boulder, under the CC-BY 4.0 license. Learning Goals: Students will be able to: A. Define “isotope” using mass number, atomic number, number of protons, neutrons and electrons. The second component of the assignment focuses on the applications of both radioactive and stable isotopes using the interactive IUPAC periodic table. Use Mega M&Ms, M&Ms minis, and regular M&M’s in this activity to examine the concept of isotopes and average atomic mass. The color of the M&M’s represent that they are the same element and have the same number of protons.

The true atomic mass of carbon on the periodic table is 12.011amu, accounting for small contributions by these heavier isotopes. Carbon-6, cabron-7, carbon-8, and carbon-9 imply isotopes with zero, one, two, and three neutrons respectively.
Stable Isotope Analysis is the measurement of the ratio of specific isotopes of elements, such as carbon, nitrogen oxygen hydrogens and sulphur, within organic and inorganic compounds. This can be used to understand the flow of energy through a food web,
